What Is a Phone Booth Interview? How YoWhoDisCalling Breaks New Artists
The Phone Booth is where artists pick up before they blow up. Here's how it works and how to get featured.
"Yo, who dis calling?" It's a line everybody from the Tri-State has said at least once — usually right before a moment that changes the day. That's the energy we built this whole platform on.
YoWhoDisCalling started as a simple idea: there are too many incredible independent artists in NY, NJ, and CT getting ignored by major outlets that only cover artists who already blew up. By the time Complex or Pitchfork notices, the artist has been grinding for five years. We wanted to be the call that came earlier. The Phone Booth is how we do it.
The Payphone Concept
Payphones used to be how the city moved — runners, hustlers, dealers, dreamers, kids calling home, everybody picking up at the corner booth when it rang. Then phones went digital and the booth disappeared. We brought it back as a metaphor: the platform rings, the artist picks up, the world listens in.
It's not just branding. The format is built around it. Every interview happens with a phone in frame, with the rotary energy of an analog era and the reach of a digital one.
What a Phone Booth Interview Actually Looks Like
A Phone Booth interview is a short-form video sit-down — usually 8 to 15 minutes — that gets cut into both the long form and snackable social clips. The questions aren't recycled press-junket nonsense. We ask about:
- The first time music felt like a decision, not a hobby
- The neighborhood that raised the sound
- The hardest verse you ever wrote and why
- The one cosign that would change your life
- What you'd tell yourself two years ago
The vibe is conversational. No corporate filter. We're not trying to make you sound like a brand — we're trying to make you sound like you.
Why Getting Featured Early Actually Matters
A Phone Booth feature does three things most artists underestimate:
- Credibility — when an A&R, booker, or fellow artist Googles your name, they see a published interview. That alone moves you from "unknown" to "worth a look."
- Backlinks for SEO — your YWD feature page links back to your music, your socials, your site. Google reads that as a vote of confidence and starts ranking you higher for your own artist name.
- Story — every artist needs a story, and most can't tell it about themselves on a cold microphone. The Phone Booth pulls it out of you. That story becomes the asset every future pitch is built on.
Artists Who've Come Through
We've sat down with artists who were sitting at 500 monthly listeners when they did the interview and crossed 50K within a year. We've also featured artists who were already opening for major acts but wanted a real, unfiltered story on record. The Phone Booth doesn't care about your follower count — it cares about your sound and your story.
How to Get Featured
The submission process is simple, but the bar is real.
- Have at least 3 songs released on Spotify or Apple Music
- Be based in NY, NJ, CT, or have deep roots in the region
- Be ready to actually show up — interviews are filmed in person or scheduled remote with prep
Submit your project here. We read everything. We can't say yes to everyone, but we respond to every submission that follows the format.
What Makes YWD Different
Generic music blogs aggregate. They rewrite press releases, post Spotify embeds, and move on. We make content with you — videos that look good, stories that read like stories, and a platform that actually gets shared in artist group chats. That's the difference between a feature that helps your career and a feature that disappears into the void on page seven of Google.
If you've been grinding in the Tri-State and waiting for somebody to pick up — this is the call. Pick up here.
